Flat flex PCB is a copper circuit (U) printed on a PI polyimide or PE polyester film substrate and pressed with adhesive.

 

FPC has many advantages, the core of which is its reliability and flexibility. Since the FPC is made of flexible materials such as polyimide or polyester, it can work at different bends without breaking or failing due to excessive bending. At the same time, the FPC also has good high and low temperature resistance, which makes it work in extreme environments from -200 °C to +350 °C.

 

FPC also has high accuracy; it can achieve fine spacing of the line and can accommodate more components in the same area, thus improving the performance of the circuit board. At the same time, flexible board also supports multi-layer line design, which can meet more design needs. In addition, FPC can use surface mount technology in the production process, and the chip can be directly pasted on the circuit board, saving the cumbersome connection work in PCB production.

1. Flexibility

One of the significant advantages of using flexible board is that it can be easily routed and assembled in 3D space, and can also be curled or folded for use. In the same volume, the weight of FPC flexible board can be reduced by about 70% under the same current carrying capacity compared with wire and cable and by about 90% less than that of rigid PCB.

The FPC flexible board is used to eliminate errors when wiring wires and cables. As long as the machining drawings are proofread, all the winding circuits produced later are the same. There will be no disconnections when installing the cable.

5. Controllability of electrical parameter design

According to the use requirements, designers can control capacitance, inductance, characteristic impedance, delay, and attenuation when designing FPC flexible boards. It can be designed to have the characteristics of a transmission line. Because these parameters are related to the wire width, thickness, spacing, insulation thickness, dielectric constant, loss tangent, etc., it is difficult to do so when using wire and cable.

 

6. The end can be soldered as a whole

Like rigid PCBs, FPC flex boards have terminal pads that eliminate wire stripping and tinning, resulting in cost savings. The terminal pad is connected to components, devices, and plugs and can be replaced by dip soldering or wave soldering instead of manual soldering of each wire.

 

7. The use of materials is optional

FPC flexible board can be manufactured with different substrate materials according to different use requirements. For example, polyester film can be used in assembly applications where low cost is required. In demanding applications where excellent properties are required, polyamide films can be used.

 

8. Low cost

The use of FPC flexible boards can reduce the total cost.

Due to the consistency of various parameters of the wires of the flexible circuit board, integral termination is implemented, which eliminates the errors and rework that often occur when the cable conductors are assembled, and the replacement of the FPC flexible board is more convenient.

The application of FPC flexible board simplifies the structural design; it can be directly adhered to the component, and the wire clamp and its fixing parts are reduced.

For wires that need to be shielded, FPC flexible boards are less expensive.

 

9. Continuity of processing
