There are two charging methods: constant current charging and constant voltage charging.

 

(1) Constant current charging method

The constant current charging method is a charging method that uses the method of adjusting the output voltage of the charging device or changing the series resistance with the battery to keep the charging current intensity unchanged. The control method is simple, but because the acceptable current capacity of the battery is gradually decreasing with the charging process, in the later stage of charging, the charging current is mostly used for electrolysis of water, producing gas, and making the gas output too high; therefore, the stage charging method is often selected.

 

(2) Constant-voltage charging method

The voltage of the charging power supply remains constant throughout the charging time, and the current gradually decreases as the voltage at the end of the battery gradually increases. Compared with the constant-current charging method, the charging process is closer to the optimal charging curve. Fast charging with constant voltage is required because the battery electromotive force is low at the beginning of charging, the charging current is very large, and as the charging progresses, the current will gradually decrease, so only a simple control system is required.

 

The difference between DC charging piles and AC charging piles

 

(1) AC charging pile:

The AC electric vehicle charging pile, commonly known as "slow charging," is a power supply device that is fixedly installed outside the electric vehicle and connected to the AC power grid to provide AC power for the on-board charger of the electric vehicle (that is, the charger fixed on the electric vehicle). Since the DC charging pile adopts a three-phase, four-wire power supply, it can provide sufficient power, and the output voltage and current adjustment range are large, which can meet the requirements of fast charging.

 

A DC charging pile (or off-board charger) is used to directly output DC power to charge the on-board battery with large power (60 KW, 120 KW to 200 KW, or even higher) and fast charging speed, so it is generally installed in charging stations next to highways.
